A DC-10 operated by Cubana
airlines overran the runway in Guatemala
City, Guatemala, on Tuesday. With 296 passengers
and 18 crew, the jet made its landing and skidded off the end of the runway into
the poor neighborhood of La Libertad.
The International Herald Tribune of December 23, 1999
reported that:
"... the cockpit and
first-class cabin were severed from the rest of the
aircraft."
A total of twenty-six people died in the crash while
forty-four others were injured. It highly likely that the people who
were killed on this plane, were the ones sitting near
where the plane separated.
